How to care for Guppy Fish article

How to care for Guppy Fish

Guppy fish, also known as millionfish and rainbow fish, is one of the most popular freshwater aquarium fish species. It is a member of the family Poeciliidae. Guppy is highly adaptable and thrive in many different enviromental and ecological conditions.

Setting up an aquarium tank

1. Choose an aquarium tank.

  • The proper tank should be between 5 and 10 gallons in volume. You don't want to overcrowd your tank.

2. Dechlorinate the water in the tank.

  • You can let it sit with the lid open for about a week to let the chlorine evaporate, or you can buy a dechlorinating kit.

3. The proper temperature of water.

  • The proper water should be between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit (or 24 and 30 degrees Celsius)

4. Use a filtration system.

  • The appropriate tank should equip with a filtration system. If your didn't, you would need to purchase one separately. You will need to change the filter media when it begins to turn brown, so make sure you monitor this whenever you clean the tank.

5. Add plants and decorations.

  • You should use live plants, as they take an important par that, along with the bacterias, will help with the toxic substances.

6. Light your tank.

  • Guppy fish should get about 8 hours of darkness per day. Too much more or less than this could cause deformities as they grow. You can put a light over the tank and set it on a timer to ensure your guppy get the right amount of light per day, or you can turn the light on and off manually each morning and night.

Feeding Guppy

1. Feed Guppy with the right food amount 2-4 times per day.

  • the appropriate food can be both dry and wet, and both live and frozen. You can buy pre-made flake food for guppy that will provide them with a balanced diet, but make sure you avoid feeding them solely a high-protein food. In addition, you should balance protein with vegetable-based food.

2. Monitor your guppies' digestive health.

  • The water is a good indicator of how well the fish are thriving on their diet. If the water goes cloudy, if there seems to be a problem with algae in your tank.
